Rapier 2012, 22-23 September

Postby Rob » 23 May 2012 14:10

Rapier 2012 will be held at Collingwood College Gymnasium, Camberley, UK. The two day event will consist of four workshops, centring on close play and the second intention, and a tournament. There will also be a meal and prize giving on the Saturday night!

The tournament will consist of two ‘streams’: single rapier and rapier with companion weapon (dagger or cloak). The winner of each stream will fight in two final, one single rapier and one rapier and companion (rules regarding a tie will be detailed another time!). Tournament rules can be found at http://www.openrulesproject.com.

Crash space is available at the venue for the Friday and Saturday only. Hotel accommodation is available at £30 per night if sharing with one other, or £60 per night for the room alone. This comes with an ‘all you can eat breakfast’, but delegates should appreciate that this is not a challenge and The School of The Sword is not responsible for any unfortunate results during the course of the day.

Transport is available for travelling to and from the event.

The cost of the event alone is £50, including the Saturday meal. Entry to the tournament will be an additional £10.

The website with a booking form will be up in the next few weeks. In the meantime, please send any questions to me or to info@schoolofthesword.com.

Hi, a number of attendees have expressed concern about the deadline for the hotel discount. We've renegotiated, and the deadline has now been extended until 19/08. Booking can still occur after this deadline, but unfortunately we cannot get the discount.

Good news on the hotel; they have dropped the price for a room to £32.50 for a night, which might tempt some of you away from the gym floor! We will contact those of you who have already booked.

The tournament is shaping up to be an exciting affair, with Thibault Ghesquiere seeking to defend last year's win, Hans Jörnlind looking for vengeance, Piermarco Terminiello seeking to put a third victory under his belt and the rest of us snapping at their heels. There are some places left in the tournament as well as the workshops, so please come and join us!

I've registered in August but I haven't received any confirmation other than Paypal's... Should I be worried about that?

To keep things short, that event was absolutely wonderful :D
Many thanks to the organizers! Made it worth the hassle to travel via Eurostar with the weapons which is impressive ;)

I hope we'll get to see photos and videos soon...

So what were the tournament results? I'm surprised nothing has been posted yet!

The tournament was divided into 2 streams, rapier and dagger and single rapier.

In the final of the rapier and dagger, after a good 3 minutes of sudden death overtime, Rob pipped me to avenge the result of the WWOC final. Git. The other 2 semifinalists were last year's finalists, Hans and Thibault, who both fought brilliantly as we've come to expect from them.

In the single rapier stream Francesco Lodà from beat his co-instructor Stefano, with Carl Gridley and Phil Edwards from SotS in the other semi final slots.

There was then a grand final between the winners of the two streams using both weapon combinations. Rob edged Francesco in the rapier and dagger, but Francesco took the aggregate victory after winning the single rapier.

The other thing worth noting is the cleaness of the fighting. One rapier and dagger pool had no doubles, and another only had one. I wasn't follwing the single rapier as closely but there were very few doubles there as well.

There were plenty of other great fights and good performances, too many to mention, IMHO the general standard was very solid.

Also worth noting that a certain Saira Runacres won the judges prize for pulling out all the stops in her third fight and winning in a dazzling display of technique. Yes I am biased, no I had no influence on the judges' decsion (quite clearly I should have won it  )
