Forearm guards

They work very well and seem to last as well. Phil C put me on to them at a Bowie knife course a while ago

Yes I know AHF use them as well, and a couple of people in our group have them. I've been meaning to get some for ages - the thing which has finally kicked me into gear is that my current forearm guards seem to have got smaller in the wash and now strangle my arms of blood every time I use them!

I've been using them for years as well. They are a must have for knife work.

They arrived very quickly from the supplier and I am very happy with them. These are hopefully going to put an end to the forearm strangulation I have been suffering from elasticated arm guards for years!
My only criticism is that they could be a bit longer - I got the large ones and they are shorter than my forearm, though hopefully with the length of my glove cuffs I should still be able to push them up to give a bit of coverage to my elbows.

We just use brushcutter shin/knee guards (like the ones you posted a link to a few weeks back). Covers the forearm, the back of the hand, and the elbow, all in one & just the right size & level of protection.

They look fine, though these and the brushcutters do not protect the inside of the forearm. I would recommend the forearm guards linked in my first post for that reason. But each to their own.

Do they have some kind of stiff inserts or just foam?

Dense foam.
This foam is a bit more impact resistant than any forearm guards I have had before, but not a huge amount more. However, the main advantages to these guards for me are that they go all the way around the forearm (protecting from bruised tendons on the inner arms and wrist) and that they velcro closed, instead of relying on elastic which even with the largest sizes I always find too tight on my arm (and therefore cuts off blood supply to my hands!).

I find that there is quite an expansion of the muscles of the forearms during practice due to increased blood supply

Quite possibly - all I know is that I was having to remove my forearm guards occasionally because my hands were getting strangled during sparring!

Wait a minute, the new ones you purchased don't have bamboo or plastic slats in them? Just Foam?

If so I'd return these and get the ones that have the slats.

The better ones have almost no padding but have heavy ribs in them that provide an incredible amount of protection.

They do have the same length issue though in that they don't cover the elbows.

I have the same guards as you have Matt, it's worth mentioning that if you can lay you hands on some stiff 2mm plastic you can easily cut them to length, open up the guard from the reverse side and slide your own "splints" in, on top of the foam pad. I borrowed a heavy duty A4 ring-binder from work and it's really added to the protection without affecting the comfort at all. (The velco strap is only sewn onto the top layer of material)

I noticed recently that the company SPES (who make a couple of excellent HEMA jackets) were making their own version of the popular escrima-type forearm guards:

Now I see that they have brought out an even better version which protects the elbow as well! -

Now I have never received a hard hit on my elbow, but I really really wouldn't want to, so I think I'll definitely have to get myself a pair of these.
