Palaestra Svecana - Porath - 1693

Postby Roger N » 15 Oct 2009 14:07

Is available here, in Swedish only:

http://nordmlib.nordiskamuseet.se/dok/palaestra_svecana.pdf

And here:

http://www.hroarr.com/manuals/sabre-...ecana-1693.pdf

It is written by Diederich Porath in 1693 and contains 19 illustrations, possibly of King Karl XII or King Karl XI of Sweden. Eight copies are available in different Swedish libraries and at least one in Finland. (http://libris.kb.se/bib/2519056) The manuscript appears to focus on Italian rapier fencing.

I have done a little research on the von Porat family and the family has very strong ties to the Swedish military with a lot of military officers in their family history.

Diederich's brothers were also Academy fencing masters at different universities. Kristofer was the fencing master of the University of Lund, Sweden, another brother the same in Åbo, Finland, and possibly one brother in Riga, Latvia.

Kristofer's son, Kristofer, was the academy fencing master at the universities of Lund and Uppsala and apparently led a pretty wild life.

Diederich's three sons were also fencing masters, one in Lund, one in Åbo and later Uppsala, and the last one in Uppsala. Finally, a grandson, Karl Kristofer von Porat was the fencing master of Uppsala University between 1795-1812.

There are several military men during the 18th, 19th and 20th century with the name Didrik von Porat. Karl Didrik von Porat who was born in1811 was a known swordsman at the time. I do not know if he was the grandgrandson of Diederich. He married his cousin.

Even today there seems to be 4-5 Didrik von Porats alive and well around the country. One of them has written a book on the "Armoured vehicles of the Swedish Army".

Between pdf pages 47 and 48, a page seems to be missing (with pieces 154-158); is that also missing in the real book, or was it just left out in scanning?

Looking through this (again) I noticed the use of the term ligering (in the title between pieces 147 and 148). Interesting. Is any of the Swedish groups working with this material?

I hadn't noticed a missing page, but I'll check it out. I am pretty sure that Dennis from Kungshamns Historical Fencing School has started working on this. He's a really good fencer and I am sure it will be interesting to follow his research here.

Roger, do you know what's happened with the better-resolution scans you have mentioned being in the works? Those might also resolve any missing pages, as well as making the book far more easily legible.. some pages are rather badly scanned/photocopied or whatever it is they've done.

Dennis in Kungshamn is already working with this, but some of us in GHFS also will start working on it.

And that's another good question... I'll have a talk with the library regarding the hirez images. :)

Yes, please do. That would make it a far more attractive proposition to start working on it.

I have now received a reply and the library is unfortunately still investigating venues for publishing manuscripts from the special libraries. There is progress and things look good, but financial issues may come into play, so keep your fingers crossed.

Great news is that the pages were indeed only missing from the scan and not the original, so you can download it from http://www.hroarr.com It's in the news section on the front page, and under the rapier manual section as well.

or use this short little url that for some reason does not seem to work well with the forum: "http://nordmlib.nordiskamuseet.se/mikromarc/wsRecInfo.asp?idno=165894&UnitId=0&DocGrp=1&SearchUnitId=0&LoanUnitId=1&comb=AND&sString=OT=adelige fächtareAND TITLE_DOCUMENT_GROUP_ID=1AND searchUnitId0"

Great!! Thanks.

Only there may also be (a) page(s) missing after lesson 173; as this appears unfinished? I only just noticed... sorry... I might even be completely wrong, as I haven't actually tried hard to decipher the Swedish of that lesson.
