Any scheduling alterations due to rain? Or are we pressing on blindly, trusting with hope in our hearts that the Met is right and it will stop raining about 1 pm?

There's nothing wrong with a little rain. Muddy ground will teach you to pay more attention to your footwork. I say press on unless it really pisses it down.

I'm waiting to hear from the other party, but I've already made the Pimms jelly, the cakes and I'm about to do the sandwiches.

I'm with George on that. I'll be there as well, hopefully with both family and Vietnamese chicken salad. Assuming I don't leave one or the other on the bus. If only I had one of those indestructible umbrellas...

Bah, I reckon the weathermen have it wrong .. bet you it brightens up nicely. :)

As for myself, sadly I can't be there :( - for reasons other than rain.

You chaps have a jolly good time; while the damp, slippy ground may not be ideal for a picnic, it could make for interesting sparring..

Yep we're on for 2pm this Sat.
(Though some show up 2.30 or 3pm or later, it's all good)
...and generally finish around 5-ish.

The nominal meeting point is the 'Big White Fountain' at:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&mrt=all&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=51.532832,-0.150622&spn=0.001305,0.003538&z=19
(ta Sylvan for the handy googlemap link)

...and we tend to amble over to and have-at-it nearby, sorta slightly south-west of that -- at the marker B showing (if my googlemap-fu is as good as Sylvan's..) on the map below:

There was a special birthday picnic last week. We haven't done any picnicking the other weeks, but there's certainly no reason not to, picnics being inherently good things. We're also planning a pub trip afterwards this week (well, more pub than usual, I should say) due to additional birthday-ness (happy birthday Tim!).

I'll have my PBT there, and so will Ian, so you'll have at least two to try. Possibly more if Junaid's has arrived by then. Tim has a flak vest liner he uses (airsoft kit, I think), and if Phil makes it he has a Tae Kwon Do style thingy as well.

I'll be taking it fairly easy- my finger's still a bit rough from my cockup last week.

It might mean that I'll bring the decent camera along and get some good stills.

'twas good fun and an absolutley lovely day for it.

In regards to the origins of the word marathon, wikipedia states it as fabled here(end of first para):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon

and says it is historically inaccurate here(end of fourth para)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Marathon

It also says the first marathon was run in 1896 between Athens and Marathon - so is this where the name is from? If it was in 1908(I think you said) where did the name come from?

Vexing.

Yeah, cos you called at like 2:15 and I didn't hear the phone ring. If you'd woken me from my drunken semi-coma at 12:00 like Phil did, we could have had a chat (however one-sided - it took a while for my vocal chords to start working again).

:)

I have 100+ pictures of the day which I'll bung up on flickr in due course. And people, you're gonna get Photoshopped.

The history is fine... When the Greeks won the Persians in the Battle of Marathon one messenger run from Marathon to the city center, Athens, to give the good news.

Hence the name Marathon and it has stayed in history as a long run cause Marathon to Athens takes about 3 -4 hours in a car let alone running it...

Reason why its historically inaccurate is that the historians back then were not scientific documentors as their modern equivelants are concidered to be but simply people who wrote down what they heard and what they thought of the truth to be.

Having said that some of the details might now be 100% accurate but the fact remains that a dude run for so long to give the news of victory over the Persian army and died upon arrival... Νενικήκαμεν!!!

:D
