Smallsword Symposium - 26/27 Sept 2009

Postby Phil C » 06 Apr 2009 23:05

The Dawn Duellists Society ( http://www.dawnduellists.co.uk/ ) is proud to present the Smallsword Symposium, a gathering of those interested in the many and diverse ways of the smallsword- a very much maligned and misunderstood weapon.

The event will happen on Saturday and Sunday 26 and 27th September 2009 in the gymnasium of the Edinburgh Academy, Edinburgh, Scotland.
( http://www.edinburghacademy.org.uk/info ... us/gym.htm )

Price of admission will be £25 for the weekend, reduced to £20 for those with membership of a BFHS recognised society, payment to be taken at the event.

Since this event is open to all it will cover a range of topics of interest from the curious beginner all the way through to the most experienced and practiced of smallsword fencers.

Classes shall be-
Saturday
Basic smallsword skills and terminology- Mr Phil Crawley (DDS Instructor) and Mr Ian Macintyre (DDS Instructor, BFHS CI)
Some thoughts on French courtsword- Mr Ian Macintyre (DDS Instructor, BFHS CI)
An introduction to the New Method- Dr Milo Thurston (LSD Instructor, BFHS CI)

Sunday
Smallsword against other contemporary weapons
A contest to finally see who is right- the New Method or the Common Method
Plus ample opportunity to freeplay, learn and meet other like minded people.

If you are interested, and to register, please contact Phil Crawley (organiser) for more details on

After I was caught out at SWASH, I think it may be worth adding any equipment requirements for the classes.

I beleive its included as part of the vast information pack available to those who are interested.

This is as I have postulated in my blog biscuits of considerable scaryness.

If you are interested please contact Phil. Even if its just a note of interest it is helpful. And he will give you far more details by reply.

And frankly why not be interested? After all it’s the most noble and manly (or womanly for those ladies out there) of weapons. :-)

This is definitely going ahead.

There is a huge amount of interest and numbers may even have to be capped soon.

Plans are already afoot to maintain the momentum of this event and SS 2 and 3 are alreay in the planinng stages...

Edinburgh is the UKs third biggest tourist city. B&Bs are plentiful. Especially as its out of season theres housld be no big issue getting a room.

Day one has been very good if a little "continetal" in terms of time keeping.

Off to pub soon.

Thanks, that was a most enjoyable event. It made a pleasant change to encounter opponents with matching weapons, and it was also interesting to see another system.

Thanks for turning up.

There are already plans for expansion and improvements for the one next year as I have more of an idea of what is wanted by you all and required by an event.

BTW If any of you want more patches (a guaranteed limited edition!) then there are still a few left over- PM me.
