Missing one Easton...

Missing one Easton arrow. Last seen: Nowhere near the target.

I finally got to go out to the range and really get some practice in. My first set at 20-30 yards from a big 4 or 5 foot diameter target was abysmal. I hit the giant target 8 times of 12, and only got one shot on the paper. The next set I got 7 on the target, none on the paper, and could only find four of the five arrows that went 50 yards downrange. Fortunately, things improved after that as I tweaked things a bit, and I didn't have to chase any for the rest of the practice. My last set (of 11 now, not 12) had all 11 hit the target with 8 on the paper. I decided to stop while I was ahead and while my arms weren't rubber. It's much more tiring than shooting a gun...

That's a great start. Don't get discouraged! Keep at it. It is very, very different than shooting firearms.

Very happy for you.

Out of interest, what were you having problems with, Alina? Were you shooting the new bow? With a thumb-draw? I'm interested to know if there was a specific problem, or if it was just general :).

Ooo more archers. I have done archery with the uni for 2-3 years now and I now need a new bow. My current one was a cheap range one by Win & Win but it is quite a stiff draw compared to other people's in the club.

I think my main problem was being a novice. I was also having some issues with aiming with my left eye - not because I'm right eye dominant, but because that contact lens was kind of cloudy for whatever reason and my right contact was much clearer. So I was tending to look more with the right eye while shooting left handed, which was a disaster. To solve that, I just closed my right eye, and it brought my aim back where it should be. These contacts that you leave in for 30 straight days and nights are definitely cool, but if you get one a little gunky on day 4, you're screwed.

You do know that aiming with your non dominant eye will always be a little off...

I don't have a dominant eye, that's a bit of a problem. If I leave both eyes open shooting right handed, I start to look with my left eye sometimes. And if I do it left-handed I'll sometimes look more with the right eye. Usually I just end up with two images at the same time, which is confusing.

I was at an Archery shop on Wednesday that looked like exactly the place to go and find out first hand whats involved, the costs and pick up a nice longbow........and the y place had closed early for the day!!!! Boy, was that annoying. I think it was called Wescliffe Archery 2000 or something, still it probably saved me a load of money. They've got some cool and some 'interesting' shops down there.

If you want to get a longbow then ask us first - there are quite a few longbowpersons on the forum and it's easy to spend more than you need to.
I'm getting a new longbow soon.

Incidently, if you do get a bow and want to go shooting you can come with me to the archery club just down between Kew and Richmond - only about 10 mins drive from Ealing. No crossbows allowed though.

That's the same by me. Insurace prohibits the use / practice of crossbow shooting, which is understandable.

Today was better than yesterday. Though my enormous bruise from where the string is slapping my arm is getting bigger, so I bought an armguard. Today I was consistently getting 8/11 shots on the paper and 11/11 on the target. I even got 7 or 8 shots in the red!

Yeah. Do you have any idea how many estrogen pills I had to take to grow these things? I'm not cutting them off!

It's okay to forget it. Seriously though, most cultures with women archers have chest guards for them. The amazons were, of course, just made up to scare Greek men. Still it makes for a funny mental image: "Hmmm...tie a piece of leather to my chest...or cut my right breast off....hmmmm....*cut*"

This could very well be true, however I'm fairly sure thate spending more than is necessary may actually be written into my genetic code so its pretty much inevitable. I'd love to be able to take up traditional longbow archery but right now there is a leach attached to my wallet and its called my car. I do love my car but it doesn't half cost a lot. :)
