Out of interest why do you have 40 inch arrows?

To draw full length shots. When I´m fully in the bow my drawlenght is 39" and my friend Totte has 40". I know the arrows from the Maryrose where quite shorter.

I don't know quite what to say. I have never heard of someone with a draw length that long. :?
How tall are you both?
Do you have any photos at full draw?

Okay, so you have about 2 inches more shaft than you need there, but still that's an insanely long draw!
I can't get my drawing arm back that far, with any bow or without a bow. You guys have weird skeletons!

I'm surprised you aren't getting more range with that length draw and draw weight. Both my 85lb bows are shooting to about 250 yards+ pretty consistently. You might actually find that heavier (thicker) arrows work better at that draw length.

I agree, The meauserments on the Red ones where tip to nock, so teh shafts are just 38". This one is a meter long and wobbly as hell. Were still experimenting with the arrows and have found that two arrows, not in the pictures, out of the corewood of a pine grown in a bog is the best for flight so far. The seem to harness the force from the bow and use it right. The aspen ones with the wide girth are good at that too, but seem to take to much draft and the just fall when they loose speed. I´ve ordered a few of that shape from Marcus but out of heavy birch instead. Gonna fit them with rubberblunts and give Ege another feel for it! Did I show you the pictures where my friend Ege tried to bloch blunts with a waister in full harness?

What wood would you recomend for the shafts for flight? Pine, Popplar/aspen or birch? And how do you fletch yours?

Yes, your all lucky the warbow never caught on in medieval sweden. For real I have sedom felt that my body is so right for the task as with thies bows. The only other weapon that has felt like this is daggers. And it could be correlated. I have good use of the fact I´m hung like an gorilla (talking arms here) in daggerplay too!

Hope to get over to England during 2011 to shoot some shafts. We might get toghther and try some expremental arrows and stuff if we have the oppertunity!

Well anyway, that's a really really impressive draw length. Like I said, I've never seen a draw length like it before! (except with a thumb-draw)

No, but I really really want to see that! :D

I've never made specific flight arrows actually, I just use the same target arrows for everything. Just that some of mine have target points and some have bodkins (because not all people like you shooting bodkins at their targets!). My fletchings look pretty similar to yours - I glue them and then cord. Of course small fletchings will give better distance, but take longer to stabilise for close range shots. I can't really recommend a specific wood for flight, as I use ash and cedar only. Ash is lighter and less stiff in general.

Hope to get over to England during 2011 to shoot some shafts. We might get toghther and try some expremental arrows and stuff if we have the oppertunity!

Yeah that would be great. I need to get back into shooting now that I've moved house. It's been nearly two years since I shot regularly!

Swordfish 2010?

Postby snowcelt » 06 Jul 2010 05:51

Hi Martin,

Love the bows! How about a demo of this at Swordfish? Perhaps an archery comp (for fun) might also be possible? Axel? Anders?

That would be fun! I´ll talk to them about it. One of the guys in the Companie of St Sebastian lives just 10km from aktiviteten. He might be able to help out and he has a few real warbows he might show at such seminar/show. Could be fun.

It´s the yewbow.
Longbow ca 85lbs @ 32 Yew, Made by Anders Wirén

The Elmbow got some compression damage in on limb after abut 300 arrows. The damage sat 17cm down from the nock. I have shortened the bow and is in the proses of re-tillering it. Right now it has a stiffnes in one of the limbs I am working away at. I think the final result will be a rather good targtbow in the 45lbs-ish area.

Matt, as I've mentioned before (albeit a long time ago); there are people in my community who refer to Scandis as 'knuckledraggers' because their "arms are so long". Perhaps there's something to that.
