Purpleheart singlestick

Postby Thearos » 02 Sep 2016 14:30

So I bought two of these, because my fencing partner was getting bored with the Knightshop baskethilt and wanted something lighter, zippier-- Purpleheart singlestick with the plastic (rather than leather) basket and rattan (rather than hickory). They're nice, read singlesticks; there is a rubber ring to help keep the basket in place, by friction, The basket is very large indeed (which must be historical) and it digs in your wrist in certain positions, unlike the Knightshop baskethilt, thus enforcing a strict hammergrip. So fun for a furious workout, and tempo / speed / distance, but it feels like a simulator of the simulator of the sword.

So the result is that you end up chopping and sweeping with the whole arm, rather than cutting with the wrist moving. Again, not to say that bouting with this things isn't fun. Gloves with good wrist protection a must.
