SOLD: 1821/96 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officer's sword

Here we have an 1821 pattern Heavy Cavalry Officer's sword, made by the famous Robert Mole of Birmingham, between 1910 and 1912 (it has the Mole manufacture number and proof slug). We know the date because the blade is etched to George V, who was crowned in 1910, but this model (which had been universal for all British cavalry officers since 1896) was replaced in 1912 by a new pattern. This is the model of sword that Churchill and his fellow officers carried in the famous charge of the 21st Lancers at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. This model was also carried in the Boer War. The pattern had not essentially changed since 1845 (when a new style blade was introduced), except for the backstrap of the hilt becoming straighter and chequered all over (see below).

This example is by a top maker and is in solid condition. The blade is straight and un-pitted. The polish is in a fairly good state and all the etching is clear and crisp. The hilt unfortunately was at some point painted - this has been stripped off the outside of the guard, but remains on the grip - this can be removed with some work. The wire binding is mostly there, with some pieces missing and the shark skin grip has shrunk a bit, but it still tight and firm on the wood. The scabbard is original, but the leather covering has dried and flaked a bit - this could be easily improved. This is a lovely big sword, hefty in the hand with a 35 inch blade.

Price: £199 + P&P
