Really? I wouldn't have ever thought that necessary.

I must admit I hadn't considered that. I'd love to know why.

why the plastic inserts?

in the bib: no throat guard that is worn around the neck can really protect you from a serious thrust, you'll always end up recieving more force then you'd like (at least that is my experience). if however the hard plastic insert is attached, somewhat flexibly, to the mask voer the bib like a hockey dangler much of the force is transfered into the mask -> head -> neck muscles. no soft(er) parts of you that aren't designed to take impact actually do so that was.

this is a dangler:

back flap: any sort of sports helmet needs a hard shell, so does a fencing helmet. the allstar thing in insufficient imo. first time you hit the ground with the back of your head you'll know why...

brow: mask will last longer

I can understand the hard plates for the throat and back of head (in fact for the back I prefer more plate and less padding - keeps heat down), but I think the plate on the brow is uneccessary. Padding over mask mesh is incredibly tough and I have never seen a mask dented under a cover of that sort - in fact I would say that if someone hit you that hard then it would be brain damage that you'd have to worry about, not a dent in your mask.

in fact, I've punched through allstar 350N masks with swords. not so that it resulted in injuy but in the destruction of the mask (wires broke). also our 1600N masks are heavily dented in the brow area, despite allstar and pbt coach covers (these are punched through in several places after a few days).

The 350N and 1600N ratings are only applicable to the bib. The mesh is subject to a different system. standard CE certified mesh has to resist a 12Kg punch test, FIE approved mesh double that.

I'd be very interested to hear what it is you do to masks to destroy them so quickly, I've never come across that before.

Normal LS, S&B, messer/saber/dussack and a bit of rapier fencing. nothing special.

Maybe you are striking harder than neccessary? Martially, would you want to bury the edge of your sword in the middle of someone's body? I'm sure if I tried hard enough I could break someone's arm every time we have a training session, but I'd rather not do that. ;)

Hopefully they'll be ready to go by mid March, and unless something horrific happens along the way they should go for about £45.
