I made this for Sarah's birthday.

Started with a 10 mm diameter round mild steel bar. All of a single piece, except the leaf. Slight filework on the leaf edges, but the rest is all worked hot.

As the first talks about this project have been made publicly, I chose to continue on with that - unless Carlo says otherwise - and show here the first (hastily made) drafts of the Stiletto.




So, Carlo, which blade form would you fancy the more ?

Thickness is not indicated, but should be at least 6 mm at forte, ending in an almost square diamond point. Pommel, cross and spacers will be mild steel, and I think of oak wood (dark when oil treated) for the handle.

Cross style is not final - I can make it simpler (thus reducing time/cost).

Simple Old File Friction Folder :







Old file, full quench, yellow temper, mirror(ish) finish, box wood handle in linseed oil, simple 2 mm nail as axis. OAL 193 mm unfolded.

What to do with scrap bits of steel (1075 and mild, too small to make any blade with), some boxwood and some time waiting for things to load on your 'puter ?

Well, you just stack the steel bits together, then heat and weld them.

And then you take another scrap bit of file, and you weld it to the previous thing.

And then you find a way to use the wood : a nail, viciously sharpened into a cutting tool.

And then you find a way to spend some time.

And in the end you get this :







18 cm unfolded. Cutting edge is C100/C130 steel. The weld between the back & edge is not perfect, but not utterly screwed up either - I've seen worse on hisorical pieces. The blade & handle have been 'antiqued' with a methof I'm experimenting at the moment.
Blade is 2 mm thick, full linseed oil quench, tempered to gold. And believe it or not, it cuts

No sharp edges, the point doesn't need to be round, I think, just not sharp.

Scrap material, again - a deeply marked bit of boxwood, and a rest of 1075 forged in the last embers of the evening. Just to make wait until the big things are finished. The scratch on the wood and shape of the tang kinda helped determining the theme for that knife, and a bit of filework did the rest. OAL 152mm unfolded. Full quench, tempered to gold.
