Miscellaneous Newish Fiore Resources

Postby Sean M » 06 Sep 2014 09:23

Three essays by Sean Hayes and by Greg Mele:
Fighting from the Guards of L'Arte dell'Armizare
Visual and Rhetorical Strategies of il Fior di Battaglia
Wide and Close Play in Armizare

While many of these ideas have been circulating orally for years, not everyone has access to that network, and I heartily approve of researchers writing down their reasoning and opinions with pointers to supporting evidence and other people's perspectives.

Less academic, but with excellent taste in illuminators, is Crowns and Garters http://crownsandgarters.blogspot.co.at/

One more: slides 6 through 13 of Italian Martial Arts at the Birth of the Renaissance

I think that there is a lot of room for people who have fluency in Italian and interlibrary loan privileges to increase our knowledge of Fiore's world.

Oh my you found that, wow.

Just for clarity I didn't write most of the content on there, but I did originally create it and prod the author into doing it.

There are certainly plenty of people with grounded opinions on Fiore's art who don't seek out attention. I just try to pass on what I come across, and to write formal arguments for print and my blog.

An attempt from four years ago to bridge the gap between Fioreists who heard Bob Charron's lectures in the oughties (or just recognized the name Francis Yates), and the Fioreists who did not (and document the results of those early years of research): "What the Works of Fiore dei Liberi Tell Us About Mnemonics in Popular Culture" (PDF)

The Fiorean Questions might also be of interest.
