break the second "rule" = keep fighting - not exactly an instant disqualification

I agree totally, it is the best goal to have and the best way to keep from breaking the first rule, but you don't have to get through it, obeing the first rule, and then find the guy two days later to obey the second because you forgot or the police broke it up or something.

How about if we change the word from kill to hurt?

1) Don't get hurt.
2) Hurt the other guy.

You don't have to kill him, simply encourage him to stop trying to kill you.

I see what you mean, but then what your rule(s) describe isn't a fight. Scaring someone off isn't a fight, it is avoiding a fight, restraining them doesn't win you a fight, it simply delays the application of rule 2. If we accept that what we do describes a violent encounter then we must have both rules.

We must adhere to rule 1, only once we have ensured that we do that we can then move on to rule two. Only when we have successfully adhered to both rule 1 and rule 2 then we have won the fight. If we only bother with rule 1 then we may well be fighting forever.

How we go about the rules are the guidlines.

Good to finaly get back to training! Ten people in tonights class with a good spread of skill levels.

Problem is now, I've got a good set of drills that get results. How to prevent boredom setting in? I know.... Homework!

Nice to see people taking some ideas straight out of the manuscripts, or comming up with their own training objectives. Also good to see that evolving over the course of a fairly open training session.

Colin will be leading us in Italian trickery for the next 2 weeks, then is away for a week, then finishing up week 3.

So, you have some homework for the interviening week - A flourish.
Everyone should have a think and a bash at home/park/work/in charge of moving vehicles etc, then we will get together in groups to figure out a flourish that will become a regular part of training.

Rules are:
No less than 16 moves
Must begin and end on the same spot
Must have at least 2 planes of movement and direction (so not just forwards and backwards, facing in the same direction)
Must be logical - ie with an imaginary opponent/s in mind

In contrast to regular training, all the footwork and body positioning must be very precise. For example: how are your feet weighted? how high are your hands and how is the cross oriented?

A little bit of monkey see, monkey do this week as we begin a 3 week stretch of dagger (with next week not being on as neither Pual or myself are there!).

Concentrated on the first few first master plays and moved onto the first few of third master. The small home work was to have a look at the later first master plays and the second master. Notice the similarities and small differences between the two and have a play around.

In a fortnight's time we will be trying a new learning pattern and also having a little bit of dagger sparring.

As Paul has left me alone for the past few weeks, I have been doing a lot of dagger work with the class. We're working with Neil's interpretation as a base and supplementing it with a few things I learned at the weekend in Wales (Neil, I'll show you what I am blathering about in the Easter holidays).

Had a few newbies come along and like it, last week we had a good sized class (10 I think), this week (for one reason or another) we had 3. Woohoo...

Mostly being looking at how to defend ourselves using 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and the one I can never remember the number of (attacks with the hammer grip from underneath...) as a cone of defense. Then bringing in the techniques after that. Working on throws by messing around with peoples spinal alignment and other bits and pieces. Also looking at a 1st master interpretation that is used just after when Neil's interpretation of it is used.

Pressure testing the techniques in a variety of ways.

Anywho, with a little bit of luck we can carry on with this (dodgy, sneaky, awful, horrible) Italian dagger stuff for a while and then go back to the (wonderful, awesome, legendary, god like) german longsword stuff.

I'm really sorry that I missed so much! I've been busy, and to be honest, the journey to Bradford is really tiring me out... it's not nice being home at 11.50 PM (if the trains are not delayed, which they usually are)...
I wonder whether we could do some dagger in Manchester as well this Sunday? We did it with our 'study group' last week, and they liked it. I found that with just the manuscript and no explanation it was quite hard to understand the pictures, so I couldn't figure it all out - need my Richards-book for that I think
