A coaching and training session with the emphasis on entering and leaving an engagement with your opponent.

We warmed up with the Whirlwind approach, then moved onto moving into a bind with an opponent. From here there were to be 3 actions on the blade and then moving to safety under cover of a thrust. This was then modified to include certain goals.

It was then into coached, goal orientated sparring, with each fighter being given a task for 5 engagements, before another task being given to them from the opinion of the coach on the side lines.

At the end of the evening it was sparring with a variety of weapons being used (I'm currently limiting myself to sabre, sometimes with a dagger in the off hand).

More of the same, but with sabre drills next week.

This week we will be working on the drills from last time and moving to paired drills. Equipment need will be a sword, gloves and mask.

For the warm up we'll spend the next four weeks looking at core body strength exercises.

IMPORTANT

Postby Colin F. » 17 Oct 2011 22:58

Due to the on going sale of the church hall and our kit having to be stored elsewhere, SG6 will be having a one month break from training (this week being the first week of cancellations) in which either new owners can take control of the hall and we can train there, or new premises can be found.

I will post updates as and when we know what's going on.

IMPORTANT!!! From next Wednesday (November 2nd) the new place of training for SG6 will be at

St Andrews Methodist Church,
North Cote Road,
Bradford,
BD2 4QH

Wednesdays 7:30-9:30

North Cote Road is the A6177 which is the Bradford ring road.

This is accessible by bus from Bradford Market Street (2 mins from Bradford Interchange) on the 645 Bus which leaves at 19:19 (stand M4) and arrives at 19:26 at Beldon Place (just outside the Khyber Palace Take Away and just round the corner from the church).

The hall is slightly smaller, but the facilities are a bit better.

We are on a 'see how we go' basis for the first month with the church wanting to get to know us. As it's a methodist church, no alcohol or smoking (like before).

We'll have a bit of space to store stuff, so we can bring the shinai, armour and masks and a few pole axes but not much else. However we'll wait until after the getting to know you period before moving all that in.

So after a month back and a quiet start, things are getting busy. Concentrating mostly on longsword and dagger ( ) with some sabre work, classes are reaching almost hall capacity and a few new faces have shown up too!

All in all, it's going well.

Not as far as I am aware, but if you can get to Bradford Interchange then I can pick people up on my way to the venue.

Interchange is the closest to our current location and I can pick you up from there too as I go past there on my way to training. Or depending on the time, you can get a bus the drops you off 2 mind walk away.

There is a club in Congleton now as well. Have a look at the thread in the General Martial Arts section.

Hi, if you are coming from Manchester then you want Bradford Interchange(from Victoria). From the interchange its a 2 minute walk to the Bus stop (Hall Ings H3). http://tinyurl.com/c9zkjsw

The 645 (Green Line) is every 15/30 minutes and is a 15 minutes ride up to Undercliffe, Killinghall road. On the longer steep hill you want to get off at the second set of traffic lights by Tesco's. http://tinyurl.com/cdzd2yf

Just a quick update.

Things are ticking along as before, still working on Taylor's 10 lessons in sabre, distance and it's applications of where to use the Meisterhau in Longsword, loads of dagger practice (mixed with some interesting applications from the aikido guys who come along) and pole axe (greg's doing 1 play per week from Le Jeu de la Hache).

As things start to move towards summer and the few tournaments are coming up we're looking at putting a bit more sparring into lessons, although we had the lads from Darlo down last night and sparring was left til the last minute!

After an empty hall last week, things have returned with a bang and we had hall capacity tonight (for longsword at least)!

Greg led pole axe for much of the session then it ended with a good sparring session that all got involved in.

Next week Greg will take the lesson although I will be around at the start of the session.
