SG1: Schola Gladiatoria London

Gordon and Nigel run these for SG4 and SG3 respectively, so I thought I ought to start an SG1 one!
Training as normal this week. We concentrated on longsword basics and I gave an introduction to Fiore's sword in one hand, as we had a few relatively new people.

I wish I'd keep such a journal for our group - but I just don't have time.

yep, that includes "time to bother doing it", but I sooooo wish I could keep such a record.

Hey wait. I kinda do that already, on our forum. Dang.

This week saw 7 new people turn up. A lot of the regulars were missing, so it was essentially a beginners' class, looking at the real basics of dagger and longsword.

Was a good lesson...

I'm still discovering bruises...

Can we do more dagger soon?

As some of you will have seen, I have been doing a survey of what the membership like to do and what they want to do more/less of.
I am quite surprised by some of the results so far, so it was definitely worth doing!

To summarise, what most people want to do more of is:
1) Bridging exercises between drills and sparring
2) Tutored/limited/half-speed sparring, all judged/tutored
3) Solo drills! Surprised by how popular these are.
4) Formal-fixed 'flourishes' (solo movement sets) to improve and refine movement and practice at home
5) Fight logic classes - what to do against what guards and circumstances
6) More varied weapons (dagger is unpopular and popular with different people, pollaxe seems universally popular, everyone wants to do spear I think)

Nothing special to report from this week's training. Steady improvement amongst the newer people and good to see a couple of old faces back at training. A reasonable turn-out of 18.
We ended the night's session with freeplay of two different sorts:
1) Where one person was trying to be more defensive, the other playing more aggressive, and then switch;
2) Point-scoring mini-tournaments (two, at each end of the hall). Each person had 3 hit points and one life, a strike to the head took 3, the torso 2 and the limbs 1. One judge, points only called by the judge, judge's decision final.

It was very interesting seeing the contrast between these two sparring conditions and seeing how differently people fought in each situation. I don't think the allocation of points to body parts represents any kind of reality, but it is a training aid, as it makes people more precious about not getting little hits to their hands and arms, and also encourages them to go for hits to the head and thrusts to the body/face. Which is a good thing, I think.

Was great fun. Especially the shield and spear sparring.

I have something a little less leg orientated planned for tuesday so don't worry.

So can everyone bring a towel they do not mind using in unusual ways, I will be bringing some short sticks and we will be doing a circuit system based on using towels, sticks and hand to hand wrestling. I will be mismatching opponants purposefully. So it is up to you guys to work out which of Fiore's symbolic animals are needed at the right place and the right time to make you victorious.

Dunno what the warm up session will be like on Tuesday but I've been doing body pump(aerobics with weights) at a couple of leisure centres this past week so it may be a variation of that but without the weights.

Sunday 14th I am up for a bit of sparring in the park if anyone is interested, I'll bring my sling and some soft bullets if anyone wants a crack at that. Oh and i'll take my bolas too.

Normally, i'd jump at the chance of a day of sparring, but i just got invited/ told i had to go help organize something...

No Probs! I may actually be working now due to one of our guys handing in his notice, i'll know before the end of the week though.

Warm up will now be a series of short games, potted sports style.
5 mins of Crab soccer
Wobbly hockey
Tramp relay

Doing circuits each week can be a little boring for everyone and you can get just as warmed up doing fun games like this.

If anyone is interested in doing any extra training sessions for cardio and general fitness in the ealing area just pm me and I can arrange some training activites for groups or just one on one.

Last nights class/session/practice/whatever was great fun... although i not sure how good an idea starting a new job with a slightly fat lip was... ah well.

Can we do more knife stuff, and also some sabre/military broadsword please?
