Schola Gladiatoria - 'fake' groups

Postby admin » 04 May 2012 23:29

Unfortunately there are two groups which have for some time been using our name (in full knowledge of our hard-earned reputation in the field).

I have to make it clear here that these two groups, in Sweden and Poland, are nothing to do with us and I can not vouch or be responsible for anything they do in our name. The former is a sort of stage combat group and the latter is a small fledgling HEMA group.

We were founded in 2001, our website was launched and I was already teaching internationally under the name of Schola Gladiatoria from that year. Both these other groups have known of our existence for years and continue to use our name regardless. Both these groups were told years ago by people in their own countries that 'Schola Gladiatoria' already existed and in fact had taught at large international events in both their countries, yet both have elected to keep the same name.

I will let you draw your own conclusions as to why they chose to do that, but having communicated with them both I am fairly sure that they enjoy the spin-off publicity from our web presence and name, and neither group shows any inclination to change their name or even add a country specifier to the end.

In the end I find it rather pathetic of them to want to remain with the name of an older, more well-known and established group. Their ambitions must be lacking. :)

It must be irritating for you, but I think you're right. It is a sad reflection on them that they do not feel they can create anything worthwhile without stealing from others.

I partly take it as a huge personal compliment and partly feel sorry for them. But yes, it is a bit irritating as well.

Are the Swedes still around. Last I heard they called themselves ffx or something similar. Can't find their website either.

You can't imagine, here in Italy, how many groups use HEMAC name in their events, and never have been in only 1 official HEMAC event!.

Especially in last months, it becomes very fashionable!

Yep, and I'm pretty sure that quite a lot of people who 'liked' them on facebook did so because they thought they were us.
Oh well... I guess immitation is the greatest form of flattery.
