As a matter of fact, Nick Thomas and the rest of AHF are switching over to the new nylons for the majority of longsword sparring, because of the drawbacks of using steel for longsword sparring.

In regards to the protection that will be needed for the new nylons, in short, yes, you'll need more than currently used in shinai sparring.
A good base would be a lightly padded Master's fencing jacket, from Leon Paul, Allstar or wherever you prefer.
Underneath I'd recommend a plastic chest protector.
For the hands, lacrosse gloves.
Add to that some forearm protectors, of some sort, a groin protector, and some knee/shin guards, and you're probably ready to go.
See our Equipment page for links etc - http://www.fioredeiliberi.org/equipment/

Just a note - in SG1 we are not intending to dispense with weighted shinai or steel swords in sparring - we are simply going to add the nylons to the triangulation. With time we may abandon the shinai, but currently I still think that shinai allow for safer beginner level sparring and melee sparring. Nylons will probably be used most of the time by our more advanced members. My view may change with time, and we may abandon the shinai completely, but I think it is unlikely at the moment.

By the way, on a completely different topic: As some of you may or may not know, Nigel has changed jobs, which means that he is quite rarely in front of a computer these days. I recommend that if you have something urgent to ask him then you phone or text him.

Nigel's silver tongue has worked it's exquisite magic. I shall be turning up with a few things tonight, assuming that we don't get any surprise blizzards, floods or general rail failure.

Corpsie: Wahey! Stab stab.

Regarding protection when using nylon: a bunch of us at SG8 are already using PBT masters' jackets, and most of us already use lacrosse gloves, so it may not be a huge change. I may need to get additional forearm protection if the jacket isn't enough, but the thing I'm slightly concerned about is collar bones, due to the increased impact on the cut. Chest and neck actually seem marginally safer than shinai, since the danger there seems to me to be the thrust more than the cut. I'm glad to hear that you don't think significantly more protection is needed, that's quite encouraging.

Riguardo a spada a una mano: I think I'll get one, Tim, so at a minimum we can smack each other with them.

My concern about the lacrosse gloves is that most of us seem to have the Tempo 2, and I think these may proove to be insufficient for the nylons. I would say added forearm and elbow protection will be essential - the padded fencing jackets are not enough by themselves.
In regards to the plastic chest protector, this is not so much for thrusts, but against cuts to the ribs and sternum. We may find that it is not necessary though. I suspect it still will be though, for general rib protection, against pommels, crossguards and all sorts of other nasty pokings.
For the collarbones, yes, that is potentially an issue. Though collarbones don't seem to get hit very often, maybe because of the fencing mask bib or something. I know Rawlings has been using a type of gorget which has a flap covering the collarbones, but that version is rather expensive for what it is.

I've been using the Slazenger throat protector, apart from the throat strip it has one stiffened flap that covers the sternum and 2 that cover the collarbone.

Apart from it being a bit bulky esp. under the PBT jacket... being as it's only 9 quid or so, it's perhaps not a bad option! (i.e. if one can't, or chooses not to, purchase the expensive one.)

Well according to tfl, travel between the club and Greenwich dlr is 45 mins..so say 1hr each way.

How long do we need, dya reckon, to view the exhibits of interest?
