As the title says, I have just been contacted by someone who wants to try out HEMA and they are in Uni at Keele and live ln Cambridge, are there any groups near either of these locations? If so, let me know, I shall pass the info onto him, so he can contact the appropriate group.

Oh come on people, there must be something near one of those two locations?

I honestly can't think of any groups near Cambridge or Keele. I feel like I should be able to but I really can't...

Hello; as this topic is quite old, maybe my question is not totally irrelevant.

I will be studying in Cambridge next year, hopefully, and I would like to keep on practicing HEMA/Historical fencing. But alas, the group finder didn't show any HEMA group near Cambridge and there seems to be no student club either... Would you know of some group that would not be referenced yet, or must I limit myself to French cane (which looks undoubtedly cool, actually, but isn't really swordfighting)?

Thanks!

I know someone who is looking at starting a study group in the area near Bishop's Stortford if that's any help?

I have a few friends I've trained with at Cambridge who might help. I'll also be in Cambridge (well the Uni, Peterhouse in particular) a lot next year, often bored so I can bring some swords and knock you around a bit.

@Cutlery Penguin : I fear I will not be able to afford the time and money required to go to Bishop's Stortford on a regular basis, but thanks for the information, it may prove useful!

@Lyceum : I had thought about creating a club in Cambridge -- with the inconvenient that I'm barely able to teach anything more than basic safety measures, and maybe one or two moves for some weapons (that is, longsword, spear, dagger, cutlass and messer). But if more experienced people are in the surroundings, we could set up something! It'd be a wonder if absolutely no one in Cambridge is interested in medieval fencing and other fancy medievalities.

I'm in Cambridge since October and have not found any clubs here. I resorted to training canne at the Cambridge Academy of Martial Arts. I would be interested to join if there are things organised. The problem is that I am leaving in October so I won't be able to train with you next year. And another problem is that I haven't got much gear here right now, but that could be fixed if there are others interested in training.

Well I'll be starting in late September/October, so that some bad timing... But I'm sure we could meet for a few practice sessions!

It would be great if things get started. I would be happy to join some sessions if I can before I leave. The important thing is to find enough people to get things moving - albeit slowly at first. I definitely think there would be enough people in and around Cambridge to do regular training sessions, but it would have to start somewhere. It might actually be worth getting in contact with different local martial arts clubs as well. I think there might be people interested to try HEMA, but perhaps don't know enough about it.

Well, as soon as I know in which college I'm affected, I will send a mail to the General Students Administration (the thing that takes care of the clubs, don't know how it's called -- yesh, as you can see I'm very comitted in my next year studies) and maybe to the University administration too. As for the other martial arts clubs, I don't know any except for the Systema club and the CAMA, do you know if there are other similar groups around that could be interested?

That seems like a good plan indeed. Apart from the clubs you mentioned I know there is some university judo club at least, but I do not know much about it.

Clubs near Keele University (stoke-on-trent) or Cambridge

Postby Mark Lancaster » 19 May 2012 07:19

You chaps could travel as well. I drive past Cambridge on my way to training in London from Norfolk. That opens several options.

There's also AOBC in Bedfordshire.

Cheers,

I'm currently based in Bishop's Stortford and haven't really had the the time to go to the Exiles or AOBC and doubt that I will, their training times aren't good for me at the moment.
If you're willing to train on the weekends then I could travel up to Cambridge and teach what I know of Silver. If you want to discuss it further just send me a PM.

That'd be great, yes! I'm a bit tipsy at the moment, but as soon as my mind will be back to normal, we'll discuss that.

Hi everyone, sorry to have abandoned the topic these last few weeks, but I had quite a lot of uni work. But here I am again, still ready to create something in Cambridge.

I should be sure whether I'm accepted in Cambridge before the end of the week. As soon as I get that, I will start sending some mails.
To sum it up, I should contact firstly the CAMA, the Cambridge Judo and Karate clubs, and the Systema club to know if they are interested and if they are ready to help, then the Uni Administration and the Students Board to present the outlines of what we could do and how and ask if, when and where we could do it. Is that okay ? I don't have a lot of experience in setting up HEMA groups ^^"

I'm Cambridge-based and recently attended Fight Camp as a trader with Bydand Armouries (I didn't participate).

I am very keen to see a group starting up in Cambridge, I am a total beginner but have studied many varied martial arts over the years - I currently train in Canne de Combat at CAMA (with Magnus L).

Please let me know if this is going ahead as I'd like to get in from the beginning!

Incidentally I was chatting with Knight Shop chaps at the weekend and they informed me about their £250 club-startup deal which sounds excellent value for money (also £35 per mask). Hopefully you can get some club setup money from the University!
