Axe fighting: Slashing or chopping?

Realise this is more of a question more for forensic archaeologists but for anyone who's studied fighting with them did attacking with them usually involve slashing cuts that follow through or chopping cuts where the edge is buried into the target? Anyone familiar with archaeological evidence that could answer this?
