2015 HEMA / HWMA Census

Postby liampboyle » 18 Jun 2015 05:53

In 2010 Roger Norling of the HROARR resource site, and the Gothenburg Historical Fencing School sent out an email survey to ascertain the number of HEMA practitioners throughout the world at that time. He stated at that time:
The reason behind this survey is to continue building stronger arguments when discussing with manufacturers of protective gear, media, government agencies and other martial arts groups.

Roger shared that data with me to see if I could use it the gain any further insights. Looking through that information there was not much information to be gained that he had not already shown on the HROARR site.

I am wanting to continue the work Roger starting with a fresh data set, as it is now five years later. I may be a bit of a newcomer to HEMA / HWMA with a small club (really two dads and our kids, with a few other folks who stop in from time to time), but in my day job, I am a professional data specialist/analyst. Since I am not able to assist the community by doing translation work, or other work dealing with the primary sources we work from I would like to think collecting and analyzing this type of information is my own way of helping the greater community.

Roger's methodology for the original census was emailing known groups for membership counts. I plan on releasing an online survey for data collection.

Mr. Norling found that at the time of his survey there were just over 8800 HEMA practitioners across 39 different countries. I would like to be able to show that our numbers have grown considerably since then. Although the change in methodology will not give an accurate comparison between the two surveys, this may serve to provide a baseline from which to build stronger data sets in the future.

To that end I am asking if anyone wishes to collaborate on this endeavor. If so, please email me at Hurstbourneacresswordclub@outlook.com

Thank you.

I will be sending you a DM with my email.

I work with digital marketing and have some experience in the area you are looking to. Mainly on the UI/UX side. Happy to give some feedback in the design stages but let me know what help you need and I will see what I can offer.

It is done.

With poison in my wine-cup, and daggers at my back.

Can you post or PM me the non-shortened URL? I was trying to pass this out on Reddit, but once I log into Google, it detects I've already voted, and doesn't let me back the URL down.

Reddit doesn't allow shortened URLs at all.

Also, you need to lock down the editing permissions on that; currently anyone can edit the form.
