Examples of Bad Swordfighting?

Postby darthturtle » 27 Jan 2014 14:12

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes...

I'm going to give a talk to my university's fantasy club about common misconceptions that people have about European arms, armour and fighting. So I wonder if anyone have examples of fights in movies, TV shows etc... that demonstrates glaringly bad swordfighting?

This is for a general audience (EDIT: people who play D&D, enjoys Lord of the Ring etc... that has a certain image of European combat influenced by those things), so I'm looking for pretty obvious stuff like "people in armour who fell can't get up", excessive spinning, bashing armour instead of halfswording and the likes.

Thanks in advance!

HEMA has forever destroyed my ability to enjoy that bit in a movie swordfight where they'll get into a bind and exchange quips while ineffectively pushing their blades against each other. All I keep thinking now is: Just stab them in the face. Or cut around. That monologue has gone on for ages - you've got plenty of time to carry out the technique.

Game of Thrones, season 1 the fight in the Eyree, or however it is called is the worst movie sword fight ever... The new Conan has plenty of spinning (done by some arrogant eastern-european stuntsmen, who have no idea what a sword is)

Pretty much every movie with a sword in it. It would be harder to find one with good sword fighting.

I remember that I cringed a lot back then with Robin Hood with Cevin Costner.
One that incorporates almost all misconceptions is the final duel in Robin and Marian (Sean Connery)
Timeline is another film that reached new depths.

The list is long…

The above video is an amusing look at a terrible movie based on the siege of Troy and its terrible sword fighting. That covers a large spectrum of the crap Hollywood does for its bouts.

Another thing to note is that the less lethal the attack is, the more likely it is going to hit your opponent. You can find this all over, a sword/knife fight between two characters. They can't get any strikes with the blades in, but out of nowhere a random kick or punch hits the foe and knocks him back so they can resume swinging at the air again.

Yeah...that happened.

Here is my nomination - it was so skilled at real speed that they had to show it in slow motion:

I'd a summer where I queued up a tonne of Sword and Sorcery flicks. That one was pretty bad...

Some of these are pretty amazing... In their own way.

Seriously, how did people take these scenes seriously, even if they have no idea how swordfighting works?

Because they were getting paid to.. by people who didn't care.. or who wanted it a certain way... bit like the rest of life! ;)

To take up that challenge, I'd nominate 'The Duelists' for good swordfighting. The smallsword duel at the start is bad, but realistic bad, the mayors son does look like someone who's not very good with a sword and is now terrified. the later sabre is a bit dramatic, but again its sort of convincing.
