Provenance of dagger quote (16th? 17thC? Rapier master?)

Postby Batfink » 30 May 2012 13:14

Well I've asked this EXACT question before but have since forgotten the answer... will remember to write it down this time... I've got this quote recorded in a file... can't remember where it's from though...

"First, anyone who grabs a dagger to injure a man he knows to be unarmed will strike a blow in the first opening he fancies, since he will only be concerned about his victim’s fleeing before receiving his wound. Therefore, this type of assailant will operate without subtlety. And for this reason, the man being assaulted can defend more easily."

Anyone know?

It's from Fabris apparently :).

Thanks, Matt. :)

Not sure where I first picked up the quote... I've got a few paragraphs but doesn't seem to be any translation of Fabris available online. Ah well. It's enough for the point I want to make.

It's Tom Leoni's translation, or one very very similar. The only difference is "a blow" here replacing "his blow" in Tom Leoni's version.

Jay Vail posted that quote in an old thread.

Yes it does help putting things into perspective (and not just for Fabris)...

Yup... there's a reason I have it pasted into a file with zero context... pretty useful all by itself...
