Nigel, is there anything in particular to bring tonight :?:
Only ask as we're doing Dagger for first time.
Are we in the usual room :?:

So tonight was good and daggers always are fun!!!

I also had my first go with a Federschwert which I really enjoyed!

Thanks for the good fun Nick, looking forward to some more steel stuff...

The evening ended, as usual, with a drink in the name of the Empire, and enough chicken wings to make chickens run for shelter!!!

I hope you were using fencing jackets when playing with federschwerts. They are known to break.
I sold my two because they handle less like a longsword than the weighted shinai do!

It was more on the correct technique side of things rather than the brute force approach but nevertheless we were extremelly careful mostly because of the comment you had made before on them snapping under pressure.

I have to say though I preferred the feeling of them over the shinai's.

In the bind steel is far nicer, yes. The problem with the Hanwei feders is that they have so little mass in the blade that it's like cutting with nothing... You should try sparring with the plastic swords some time.

Tuesday perhaps???

I totally agree on what you say Matt. What I found interesting, and this comes down to Nick being patient and helpful as well, was the different reaction of the sword compared to a shinai in the bind.

As said before, we didn't use any cuts or heavy thrusts but it was more on the technical side of "ok the swords are binded what do we do next" which is something I think the shinais lack feel due to being made out of wood...

Looking forward to some more of this and if plastic can help then happy to try as well

I agree - that's why I recommend people to drill with steel as soon as possible. For sparring I think the plastic swords are sort of half way between the shinai and the steel - they are more sword-like than shinai, but you have to be more cautious with them than shinai. I really liked the Swedish guys' plastic swords - they handle better and are safer than the ones we have.

Do you have any links for the Swedish ones? I haven't seen them...

Also, the sound of metal swords changes everything...

Yes they are, because they have distal taper, like a real sword (or a federschwert). They also handle better and are a bit lighter (or seem lighter).
They are made by a guy in the group - there are some other threads about them on the forum.

Another good example of why they are nice is in the third part of Scott's and Matt Galas' sparring.

Check out at 0:59. With a regular nylon, that thrust would probably have sent Scott flying backwards, perhaps even with a cracked rib if he was unlucky.
