This is mentioned in Burton's treatise of 1876, and together with Maclaren's earlier work of 1864 seems to have been quite influential.

Wow thats a great find. In many ways it is almost modern and should have turned out fit strong troopers. Shame the British Army had to learn these lessons over and over again, the physical condition of recruits during WW1 prompted a full blown inquiry.
