Hi all,

A transcription with photos of the illustrations of Siebenhaar's "Handleiding voor het Onderwijs in de Schermkunst" (Manual for the Education in Fencing) can be found on the School voor Historische Schermkunsten website here:

http://www.bruchius.com/docs/Siebenhaar ... %20RvN.pdf

The transciption is of the 3rd improved printing of 1861. The book was first published in 1858.

Enjoy!

R

Nice stuff- one niggle in the intro is that the text clearly deomnstrates foil not duelling sword (what we'd otherwise likely know as an Epee). The two are not synonymous.

Thanks; I'll fix that. (I thought dueling sword and foil were used synonymously back then. It's not really my area of expertise/interest to be honest.)

Google books has the second edition (1858) here:

http://books.google.de/books?id=bm9RAAA ... &q&f=false

My transcription is of the third edition (1861)

There appear to be differences in the text (e.g. intro to "Het Geweer"), and of course the second edition is without plates.

I would be curious to compare the staff and cane to Joinville, if anyone would be willing to translate that part I would be very grateful.

John Jozen of De Zwaardkring was working on an English translation of Siebenhaar. You could try to contact him (I am not sure if he is on this forum, but I know he is in the Bartitsu list).

Unfortunately, I do not expect to have time to translate you this work any time soon. I just don't have time to translate that much right now.
