That's weird & really sucks. What bike have you got? Can't you get a cheap replacement from the breakers or is it really exotic?

it is not that exotic... it's a GSX 1400. but the replacementmarket is not the big for getting a non-official part... I must check it, if I can repair the cables and make a new one... but therefore a have to break up the ignition coil for replacing the wires...

Caz, I would be more than happy if you can make a rapier (Alfieri?) workshop :).
I'm really excited about this little event actually, as it's always a nice relaxed environment, and it looks like we'll have a bigger cross-section of people this year, from Liechtneauer to Fiore, from pugilsm to combatives, from I.33 to gatka and hopefully from English smallsword to Italian rapier! Sweet 8)

There is also the chance there may be a couple of Defense Dans La Rue/Bartitsu/Savate guys coming along as well.

2 of my guys are willing to go (Alex, the runner-up, and Benj) - still wondering if they'll fly or go by train.

Any advice ?

If they can, fly to Stanstead - it's easy to travel to the Mills from there, and probably cheaper than Eurostar - they'd have to fly from Lyon I guess.

Stanstead trains?

Postby Andreas Engström » 26 May 2006 11:01

Hi!

I've been having some difficulty finding the schedules for the trains between Stanstead and GPM. I was planning to come on friday, either afternoon or evening, and leave on sunday or monday (preferrably early if on monday, if on sunday of course I won't want to leave before the event is well and truly over).

I'm having some trouble finding out when the last/first trains leave/arrive. How late on friday can I arrive without missing the last train? How late on sunday can I leave, and how early on monday? Wouldn't want to be left standing on Stanstead late friday evening only to find out that the last train already left... or even worse, miss my flight home because no train leaves early enough on monday morning..

Inquiring minds (yes, I think others might be interested as well) want to know, and humbly beg for answers from the founts of local british wisdom.

Transportation

Postby Jean-Luc » 26 May 2006 15:05

Hello !

First, thanks to Matt and all the fine fellows I had the pleasure of meeting last Tuesday for your friendly welcome. Thanks especially to Greg for his patience and insights into the basics of the longsword.

I am planning on coming to the Gunpowder Mills event. So as to stay loyal to my employer, I shall arrive via Heathrow airport and from there, either get a lift from one of you guys (many thanks), or take the underground to the nearest station from GPM or a bus to Stanstead... This part of the trip is a bit unclear to me, I would really appreciate some light :)

The question is : how would you go from Heathrow to GPM ?

Thanks
JL

Right, from Heathrow to the RGM I believe the best way is to get the tube to Liverpool Street station and from there you get the over-land train to Waltham Cross (which is the local station). I will probably be aiming to arrive at the Mills in the early evening of the Friday, or possibly I might go earlier.. Haven't decided yet!

Hi guys - sorry, just corrected my info - the nearest station is WALTHAM CROSS. Trains go to and from Liverpool Street to it about every 30 mins. The journey from Stanstead Airport to Waltham Cross takes just under one hour - you can see the times and plan the journey here:
http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk

Andreas,
If you want to stay until the Monday then you are very welcome to stay at my place on the sunday night, as everyone will leave the Mills at the end of sunday. That invite goes for anyone else as well - I remember last year I had like 8 Swedes on my floor . From my place to Liverpool Street takes about 45 mins on the tube, but it direct on one line.

Thanks a lot, Matt. I will definitely be one of the swedes on your floor this year, then. There will probably be more of us there as well, I know that at least Anders will go home on monday too.. RyanAir has extortionate prices on sundays (well, at least compared to their monday prices :-))

Now I'm conflicted. Matt and Nigel, kindly post photos of your respective floors, so I can decide which one looks more conducive to a good night's sleep. :-)

There are no direct trains from Stansted to Waltham Cross. You will have to change at Cheshunt. Give us a call from there as it's pretty close & it may save some time if we pick you up from there.

In addition to what Matt posted here is the local time table:

We both have living rooms quite separate from bedrooms, so snoring is not an issue - at least not English snoring; Swedish snoring might be.
Nigel's right - if you are getting back to Stanstead the next day then it would make more sense to stay at his because I'm on completely the other side of London! From my place to Stanstead is a bit of a trek.. which is why I never use Stanstead!! (I live close to Heathrow though, which caters to a better kind of passenger ;))
