I spoke to one of them at the weekend. The reason they haven't finalised the itinery is that they've had too mamy instructors offer to teach. They are looking at who to book in order to get a good cross section of periods & styles.

Which sounds pretty cool. :)

Part of a provisional programme from organiser Mark Donnelly of SSS:

So far the lineup is as follows: (in no particular order)

¨ Mark Hillyard and Peter Rostron from the Academy Gloriana will be giving a talk and workshop on the historical background of George Silver and the foundations of the English backsword system

¨ Dr. Milo Thurston of the Linacre School of Defense will be running a workshop on coming to grippes with weapons of the 17th-19th centuries in terms of seizures, disarms and grappling tactics

¨ Andrew Feest of the Sussex Rapier School will be running a workshop on the foundations of Italian Rapier play

¨ Alberto Bomprezzi of the AEEA (Esgrima Antigua) (Spain) will be presenting a talk on the foundations of Spanish swordplay comparing the Espada Vulgara with the more formalized variants of the Academie de l’Espee followed by a workshop on the same

¨ Dan Smith and Adam Roylance of the KDF and EHCG will be running a practical workshop on the maintenance of initiative in the German longsword and sword and buckler systems of Lichtenauer (I think)

¨ Maestro Andrea Lupo Sinclair from FISAS & IMAF will be giving a talk on the concept of Sprezzatura followed by workshops demonstrating the continuity of principle between 16th century Italian Sidesword and 17th Century Italian Rapier

¨ Natasjia Solgaard Groenli from FISAS will be running a practical workshop on the sword and buckler system as presented in I.33 as a follow up to the very successful and popular demonstration of the material she presented at the BFHS AGM last winter in Brighton

¨ Graeme Rhymer (Head of Collections at the Royal Armouries) will be presenting a talk on the historical evolution of sword typologies and general hopology accompanied by hands on examination of original examples from the Armouries collection

¨ David Starley (unconfirmed) of the Royal Armouries will be presenting a talk on metallurgy of weapons and armour in both occidental and oriental history to explore what actually happens to metal when it is forged and folded and stretched and what the steel is actually capable of delivering or withstanding

¨ Maestro Paul MacDonald of the MacDonald Academy of Arms and IMAF will be offering us either a demonstration or workshop on 18th century backsword (though the actual subject and nature of his presentation remains at the moment unconfirmed)

¨ A Panel discussion on various aspects of sword-related history will be run by the Linacre School of Defense and shall consist of at least 3 half hour presentations

¨ Phil Crawley of the Dawn Duellist Society and the Sussex Rapier School has agreed to present (if there is sufficient interest) a workshop on gentleman’s defense with handkerchief (including its adaptation to four different combat systems – which I believe to be English, French, Italian and Spanish)

¨ Maestro Mario Magni of FISAS and IMAF will be presenting a workshop the Italian longsword system as offered by Vadi – this will take place alongside of:

¨ Provost Alberto Balasso from FISAS who will be presenting a workshop on the Italian longsword traditions of Achilles Morozzo – together with Maestro Magni (above) they will be drawing comparisons and contrasts within the Italian longsword systems of Vadi and Marozzo

the defence with a hanky sounds fun, but not worth driving to Leeds and shelling out hotel, meals and entrance fees for.

For the cost of the weekend I could buy a new sword...

Phil's hanky workshop is interesting and good fun, well worth doing. The rest of the program looks to be a good mix, nice to see some more longsword workshops than last time and some more historical items.

I hope we are going to meet some of you guys there :D

Mr Donnelly has clarified on the BFHS mailing list that there will in fact be more teachers and classes than just those indicated above.
