This was arms and armour scholar Sir James Mann's assessment of this remarkable man.

Robert Lyons Scott (1871-1939) was the chairman of the oldest shipbuilding firm in the world. On his death he bequeathed to the people of Glasgow his magnificent collection of arms and armour comprising 890 pieces and 3000 books and manuscripts; the "most considerable collection in private hands at that time". It included such treasures as the "Avant" armour, c. 1440 and the Greenwich armour for man and horse of the first earl of Pembroke, c. 1555.

Along with arms and armour his extraordinary collection contained one of the finest libraries of its kind. What he referred to in 1935 as "the inevitable books - damn them!" include the only surviving copy of the earliest printed book with illustrations on swordsmanship (Vienna, 1516), a unique illustrated MS of the followers of Liechtenauer, and a manuscript in the hand of the master of arms Gregor Erhart.

The aim of Scott's generous bequest was to "provide an instructive survey of the history of arms and armour" to the people of Glasgow.

I would like to extend an invitation to any and all historical fencing groups in Scotland: at the R.L. Scott conference on the 19th and 20th of September this year, we would be honoured if you could put forward a pair of your members to provide a demonstration of the top level of fencing that you practice. Our intention is to run a half hour during the lunch break on one of the two days that will comprise several short demonstrations, showcasing some of the best historical fencing that Scotland has to offer, in the main hall of the Kelvingrove Museum.

As the demonstrations will be happening in a public building, groups must have their own public liability insurance, and appropriate safety equipment must be worn. Ideally the demonstrations should be choreographed to some extent so that the participants can showcase top level skills in a safe fashion without resorting to potentially messy sparring. Demonstrations should take no longer than 5 minutes, preferably closer to 3 minutes.

We would love to give each and every historical fencing group in Scotland the opportunity to demonstrate at the event. Members of various Scottish groups have already signed up to come to the conference and so we really do hope that many of you would be willing to put on a display.

If you would like to discuss the matter with us and possibly have your group demonstrate something then please send an email to directors@triquetra-services.org so that we can discuss the idea in more detail with you. We would like to ensure that each group demonstrates something different so that there are as few overlaps as possible. The cut-off date for getting in touch about this opportunity will be the 20th of June; please do get in touch as soon as possible so that everything can be organised with as little hassle as possible.

Delegates are already signed up from around the world, from across three continents. This is Scotland's chance to showcase our vibrant historical fencing scene and to build ties between practitioners of the subject and academics in this field of study. I did indeed, with the help of Ben Kerr and Dr Moffat the Kelvingrove Museum and I hope it turns out to be as good as it looks!

We had a very successful and productive meeting with the senior management of the Kelvingrove Museum today with regard to the R.L. Scott conference in September. Things are going very well and the museum's senior management people are very enthusiastic about the event!

Another eminent professor has agreed to speak at the conference. Professor Matthew Strickland of the University of Glasgow has offered to give a presentation with the title "Beyond Cold Steel: the Symbolism of the Sword in Medieval Chivalric Culture". We had another very productive meeting at the Kelvingrove Museum today about the R.L. Scott conference. It looks like we have managed to secure quite a bit of funding for the event and everything is progressing very nicely indeed. Please do remember to book your place if you have not yet done so!

The last of the admin stuff is coming together for the R.L. Scott conference. We have secured the Glasgow City Chambers for the drinks reception on the Wednesday evening, we have almost everything sorted with the Kelvingrove Museum, we are seeking the final confirmations from speakers, we are waiting for the museum to sign off on the health and safety stuff for the demonstrations on the first day...

From the start of September the price will go up by £10 per ticket due to the extra administration that we have to do for each registration. Things are going very well, thank you Dan I think some event footage is being taken, but due to the copyright rules at the museum we are going to have to be very careful with it. I believe the plan is to release the soundclips, if not video footage, but I will have to check with the person who proposed that the sound recordings happen.
