Harry,

just a quick question: have you decided to drop my train the trainer workshop on what to look for in improving skill specific fitness for different swordsmanship styles practiced?

It's all right, but let me know so I won't put too much time in planning the class (I had some ideas :D). If you want to squeeze it in somewhere, I'm more than happy to run it!

...and since my name is there already :D, I can actually run warmups in the morning for those interested - voluntary of course, but some people might enjoy a group warmup in the morning. I think it is a brilliant idea!

Thx for coming folks!

you made this weekend an amazing one.

The workshops were brilliant, the sparring was much fun and the chats were funny... what could it be more?

once again gratulations to Tillman Wanke from Ochs who has won our tournament the second time, and also gratulations to Constatin Speitel from Indes Sbg. who entered any tournament the very first time and reach instantly the finals.

Tillman is so far the reigning "Supreme Opposum of Vienna" and because of this year victory also the "Supreme Platypus of Vienna" :)

Hail the Platypus :D

Thank you very much folks!

Hi!

I'll write more at my blog at some point (after catching up with work and everything), but I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Harry and all the other people with silly hats for a very enjoyable event, great hospitality and comradeship. It was an honor to be invited to instruct in such a quality event!

Also thanks to all the other instructors and students - there was a very attentive and keen student body present in this event, which is always inspiring to see! It was great to meet new people, meet some friends for the first for the first time in person and also to catch up with all the rest who I only get to see at the events. Special thanks to Roland for the work with sword and buckler - most enjoyable and (As always) a great learning experience.

I hope to see you all again soon!

Yours,
Ilkka

A huge thank you to the team at Dreynschlag for a wonderful event. Special praise should go out to Harry, Martin and Oli for organising but I fully appreciate all of the hard work done by everyone behind the scenes. Austrians are now about as awesome as Swedes (who are still awesome).

I had a great weekend of classes from Hans Heim's messer to various parts of Ilka's vast store of knowledge and consider myself distinctly better informed than before I went. Added to this was some awesome sparring and some hugely convivial company from all over Europe and it really was a pleasure to be there.

Who else but a Frenchman could turn up to a swordfighting event with 4 women? Fab, you rock and I will see you all in Dijon. On a slightly more serious note, there seem to be increasing numbers of ladies actively participating in Hema/WMA in the past 18 months. This is good. Whoever is recuiting at the moment is doing something right.

Better quality lacrosse gloves are OK for sparring with steel. Not great, but OK.

All male Swedish sword fighters are to be refered to as 'Anders' until you are informed differently. 'Julia' seems to work for the ladies.

The answer to any sort of question along the lines of "Do you know who . . . . . ?" is "the guy in the black t-shirt". He probably has long hair and a goatee and is German speaking as well.

On that note, a special thank you to all of my training and sparring partners for using excellent English when dealing with me. In my monolingual ignorance I would have been rather lost otherwise. Humbling. Thanks chaps (and ladies).

Tim
Thumbs up!

.
a short summary
of the dreynevent from a very personal rapier view..:
.
seminars : we did :
.
the smallsword with peter and andrea from klingenspiel who showed
the basics .. it was my first contact with a smallsword and i definitly like the weapon..
we will buy some and use them for training accuracy and point controll for our rapier play..
or when or shoulders are too injured for holding the heavier rapiers..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
.
the spanish system with ton puey..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
pfuuu .. a totally different world..
.
sparring :
.
i did some fights against the spaniards..
as i said .. a total different approach.. they circle constantly..
which is rather annoying for a low standing fabris-fencer..
against the students and eugenio i had the chance of some good hits..
especially with inquartata http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/ as long as they are not walking too fast..
and sometimes a sbasso ducking their cut was usefull.. my sister made one the very few hits with this..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
there is also the chance to avoid the blade-contact they need by stringere/carvatione and try
a lounge on the outside.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/ but not against ton puey.. as he knows about 12345234 ways to counter that..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
with the dagger it was even worse.. i didnt had the slightest chance ..
frustrating and fascinating at the same time..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
it s a pitty nik didnt showed up.. this would have been the fight of the year..
nik saving the honour of the italien systems..
or not.. :?
.
peter fought ton too..
but switched to the spanish system soon..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
as he can also fight spanish..
.
fencing with kit mitchell..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
i never fought someone who does silver before.. its a rather amazing system..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
and with a fabris and a silver fencer standing in position .. its quite a view..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
she uses a lot of cuts with "sidesteps" , which are effective..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
but sometimes dangerous (hits to the face)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
on the other hand she is capable of closing the distance very fast
and if she can grab your swordarm.. that´s a problem
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
most amazing is, that kit is capable of fencing with both hands..
an can switch from left- to right handed swordplay..
"actually.. i am not left handed.."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3gfFVmw0kA
.
.
fighting with alex kiermayer (ochs), althalus (achille marozzo) and sarah, andrea, peter (klingenspiel)
were all fights within the differnt italian systems and we all know each other well from the last years..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N03/4340012279/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N ... 253752509/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47346901@N03/4340011099/
but everyone seems to fight much better (technically) now..
the level of the fights at the dreynevent was definitly higher than the last years..
and a lot of girls show up :D .. stabbing holes into innocent male ..
cu next year..
